Mumps

Mumps is a disease of children and young adults, characterised by a hard swelling over one or both cheeks due to a viral infection of the parotid (salivary) glands, accompanied by pain and fever.

Homeopathic Treatment

Mumps can be prevented with ease, through Homoeopathy. If cases of mumps are reported in your city or seen in your neighbourhood (or in your child's school), immediately give your child a dose of Parotidinum 200 on three successive days, to confer upon him a reasonable immunity.

However, if your child has already contracted mumps, give him that remedy from the below-listed ones, whose symptoms match with those of your child:

Arsenic 30: Burning pain in the affected cheek, which is better by warm / hot applications! Another distinguishing feature is undue fear (of death) causing severe anguish and restlessness.

Belladonna 30 : Sudden, acute attack of mumps, affecting the right cheek, which looks red and feels hot. Though there is high fever, the child is not thirsty (like pulsatilla).

Mercurius sol 30 : Hard swelling of the affected cheek with stiffness of the jaw and difficult swallowing; offensive breath; profuse offensive perspiration. The tongue is moist (due to excess saliva), thick and flabby and shows imprint of teeth (like Rhus tox). There is sweetish (or bitter) and metallic taste in the mouth and acute thirst for large quantities of cold water.

Pulsatilla 30 : Severe pain in the affected cheek changing places from time to time (wandering pain) accompanied by acute chilliness (yet aversion to cover and yearning for open air). The patient, usually a girl, has a mild, weeping nature. The tongue is dry yet there is no thirst. Pain is relieved by lying on the affected side (cheek) and by cold applications. On the other hand, warm or hot compresses worsen the pain.

Rhus tox 30 : Severe soreness (a beaten-up feeling) in the affected cheek causing restlessness (like Arsenic), There is bitter taste in the mouth. The tongue, which has a darkred tip, shows imprint of teeth (like Mercurius). Soreness in the cheek lessens on applying warmth or eating warm / hot foods (like Arsenic but unlike Pulsatilla). There is great aversion to open air (unlike Pulsatilla).
