Chemotherapy Treatment

Chemotherapy is helpful in treating breast cancer, blood cancer, lung cancer, colon cancer and so on. These drugs help in elimination of the cancer cells from the body’s system. The drugs that are used in treating cancer in chemotherapy are called as chemotherapy drugs. They may be taken by way of injections, intravenously or orally. This decision is to be taken by the concerned medical team members.

The chemotherapy drugs and treatments completely depend upon the stage of cancer and the type of cancer. Some of the chemotherapy treatments are meant to cure cancer completely while some intend to slow down the growth of the cancer cells. Thus it is vital that the goals of treatment must be clear from the very start.

It is important to note that chemotherapy is much beneficial as far as radio therapy and surgery is concerned. Chemotherapy works towards deletion of cancer cells from the body’s immune system with out affecting other healthy cells of the body. And surgery and radio therapy only removes the cancer effect from one or two specific areas.

In many cases, the chemotherapy is used with other drugs and medications. It is believed that such an application of a combination therapy can give good health results. And it is effective then isolated chemotherapy. This is true especially in lung cancer. In lung cancer, it is seen that combination therapy is more effective than isolated chemotherapy. And chemotherapy is also vital if before a surgery the doctor’s intention is to shrink the size of the tumor.

The other factors in chemotherapy like the extent of treatment, duration of treatment, number of cycles and dosage etc. is to be determined by the doctor. It is important to note that even though chemotherapy is an effective treatment, it has certain side effects. In some people thee side effects are truly very chronic. And therefore it is vital to first weigh the positives and negatives of any particular treatment and then move ahead for the same. The side effects that are associated with chemotherapy are hair loss, loss of memory, lack of concentration, tiredness, vomits and many more. When chemotherapy treatment is stopped these symptoms also move away within a period of 6 weeks.

But stopping the treatment is a big decision. And it must not be taken without a collective talk or chat. It must include the decision of family members of the patient, the patient and the doctor’s team. This is because sometimes stopping chemotherapy is the only one option left. And sometimes the patient himself feels that this is an unbearable thing, and then he must stop this. Sometimes, there are other options too that will help in dealing with cancer. These treatments may also be life prolonging but may not be as effective as chemotherapy. But it may be so that such treatments may create least side effects or no side effects which can matter as far as quality of the patient’s life is concerned. So, make the right decision.
