Ultravate Medication - Uses & Side Effects

HALOBETASOL (Ultravate®) is a corticosteroid. Halobetasol treats skin problems that are accompanied by itching, redness, and swelling. Generic halobetasol skin cream and ointment are available. Ultravate is a high-potency steroid medication that relieves the itching and inflammation caused by a wide variety of skin disorders. It is available in cream and ointment formulations.

Ultravate Dosage

  • Once or twice a day, gently and completely rub into the affected skin a thin layer of Ultravate. Do not use more than 50 grams per week, and do not continue treatment for more than 2 weeks.

Uses of Ultravate

  • This medication is used to treat a variety of skin conditions (e.g., eczema, dermatitis, allergies, rash). Halobetasol reduces the swelling, itching, and redness that can occur in these types of conditions. This medication is a very strong (super high potency) corticosteroid.
  • Halobetasol(Ultravate) is used to treat inflammation caused by a number of conditions such as allergic reactions, eczema, and psoriasis.
  • Ultravate may also be used for purposes other than those listed in this medication guide.

Side Effects of Ultravate

Side effects cannot be anticipated. If any develop or change in intensity, tell your doctor as soon as possible. Only your doctor can determine if it is safe to continue using Ultravate. Side effects may include:

  • Burning
  • itching
  • stinging

Warnings and precautions before taking Ultravate:

  • Use of steroid medications can lead to a slowdown in the body's production of natural steroids and result in a shortage when the medication is stopped. To reduce the likelihood of this problem, use Ultravate for no more than 2 weeks at a time, and apply it only to small areas.
  • When used on children, steroid creams and ointments have been known to stunt growth and raise pressure inside the skull, resulting in headaches, bulges on the head, and loss of vision. Ultravate is not recommended for children under 12.

Drug Interaction :- There are no known interactions between halobetasol skin preparations and other drugs. Tell your prescriber or health care professional about other skin products you are using. Do not apply halobetasol at the same site as other skin preparations without advice. No interactions have been reported.

Overdose

An overdose of Ultravate is not likely to threaten life. If the medication is ingested, or if a large amount is used over a large area and you are experiencing side effects, call an emergency room or a poison control center for advice.
