Patanol Medication - Uses & Side Effects


OLOPATADINE (Patanol®) helps to prevent itching of the eye caused by allergies. Generic olopatadine eye solution is not yet available.Patanol is an antihistamine that relieves the red, itchy eyes often caused by allergies. Patanol is a prescription medication that you can use to stop the affects off allergies in your daily life. Patanol is a liquid drop that you use in your eyes to keep your eyes from itching because of the allergies that you suffer from. Itchy eyes can cause redness, which will go away as you quit rubbing your eyes and your eyes are not itchy anymore because you are using Patanol.

Patanol Dosage

  • The usual dose is 1 drop in each affected eye 2 times a day. Allow 6 to 8 hours between doses.

Uses of Patanol

  • Patanol is used to treat ocular (eye) symptoms of allergic conditions, such as inflammation, itching, watering, and burning.
  • Patanol may also be used for purposes other than those listed in this medication guide.
  • This medication is an antihistamine used to treat itching and redness in the eyes due to allergies.

Side Effects of Patanol

Side effects cannot be anticipated. If any develop or change in intensity, tell your doctor as soon as possible. Only your doctor can determine if it is safe to continue using Patanol. Side effects may includes:

  • Allergic reactions
  • bloodshot eyes
  • blurred vision
  • burning or stinging
  • changes in taste
  • cold-like symptoms
  • dry eye
  • headache (occurs in 7 percent of patients)
  • runny nose
  • sensation of a foreign body in the eye
  • sinus inflammation
  • sore throat
  • swollen lids
  • weakness

Warnings and precautions before taking Patanol :

  • Use only in the eyes. Patanol should not be taken orally or by injection. Safety and effectiveness have not been established in children under 3.
  • Before using this medication, tell your doctor or pharmacist your medical history, especially of: contact lens use.
  • Use caution engaging in activities requiring clear vision such as driving or using machinery because your vision may be temporarily blurred or unstable after applying this drug. Alcohol may worsen this effect. Limit alcoholic beverages.
  • This medication should be used only when clearly needed during pregnancy. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor.

Overdose

An overdose of this medication is unlikely to occur. If you do suspect an overdose, call an emergency room or poison control center near you. If the drops have been ingested (taken by mouth), drink plenty of fluid and call an emergency center for advice.
