Hydrodiuril Medication - Uses & Side Effects

HYDROCHLOROTHIAZIDE (Hydrodiuril®, Esidrix®, Oretic®) is a diuretic. Diuretics increase the amount of urine passed, which causes the body to lose water and salt. Hydrochlorothiazide helps to treat high blood pressure (hypertension). It is not a cure. It also reduces the swelling and water retention caused by various medical conditions, such as heart, liver, or kidney disease. Generic hydrochlorothiazide capsules or tablets are available.

Hydrodiuril Dosage

  • The usual dose is 25 milligrams to 100 milligrams per day. Your doctor may tell you to take the drug in a single dose or to divide the total amount into more than one dose. Your doctor may put you on a day on, day off schedule or some other alternate day schedule to suit your needs.

Uses of Hydrodiuril

  • This medication is used to decrease fluid retention (edema) that occurs with congestive heart failure and disorders of the liver and kidney.
  • Hydrochlorothiazide may also be used to treat patients with diabetes insipidus and certain electrolyte disturbances and to prevent kidney stones in patients with high levels of calcium in their blood.
  • This medication is used to treat high blood pressure. Lowering high blood pressure helps prevent strokes, heart attacks, and kidney problems.

Side Effects of Hydrodiuril

Side effects cannot be anticipated. If any develop or change in intensity, inform your doctor as soon as possible. Only your doctor can determine if it is safe for you to continue taking HydroDIURIL. Side effects may include:

  • Abdominal cramping
  • diarrhea
  • dizziness upon standing up
  • headache
  • loss of appetite
  • low blood pressure
  • low potassium (leading to symptoms such as dry mouth
  • excessive thirst
  • weak or irregular heartbeat
  • muscle pain or cramps)
  • stomach irritation
  • stomach upset
  • weakness

Warnings and precautions before taking Hydrodiuril:

  • Diuretics can cause your body to lose too much potassium. Signs of an excessively low potassium level include muscle weakness and rapid or irregular heartbeat. To boost your potassium level, your doctor may recommend eating potassium-rich foods or taking a potassium supplement.
  • If you are taking HydroDIURIL, your kidney function should be given a complete assessment, and should continue to be monitored.
  • If you have liver disease, diabetes, gout, or lupus erythematosus (a form of rheumatism), HydroDIURIL should be used with caution.
  • If you have bronchial asthma or a history of allergies, you may be at greater risk for an allergic reaction to HydroDIURIL.
  • Dehydration, excessive sweating, severe diarrhea or vomiting could deplete your body's fluids and cause your blood pressure to become too low. Be careful when exercising and in hot weather.

Drug Interaction :- If Hydrodiuril is taken with certain other drugs, the effects of either could be increased, decreased, or altered. It is especially important to check with your doctor before combining HydroDIURIL with the following:

  • Barbiturates such as phenobarbital
  • Cholestyramine (Questran)
  • Colestipol (Colestid)
  • Corticosteroids such as prednisone and ACTH
  • Digoxin (Lanoxin)
  • Drugs to treat diabetes such as insulin or Micronase
  • Lithium (Lithonate)
  • Narcotics such as Percocet
Overdose

Any medication taken in excess can cause symptoms of overdose. If you suspect an overdose, seek medical attention immediately. Symptoms of Hydrodiuril overdose may include:

  • Dry mouth, excessive thirst, muscle pain or cramps, nausea and vomiting, weak or irregular heartbeat, weakness and dizziness.
