Cedax Medication - Uses & Side Effects

CEFTIBUTEN (Cedax®) is a cephalosporin antibiotic. It treats infections of the respiratory tract and ears. Generic ceftibuten capsules are not yet available.
Cedax cures mild-to-moderate bacterial infections of the throat, ear, and respiratory tract. Among these infections are strep throat, tonsillitis, and acute otitis media (middle ear infection) in children and adults. Cedax is also prescribed for acute flare-ups of chronic bronchitis in adults. Cedax is a cephalosporin antibiotic.

Cedax Dosage

  • The usual dose is a single 400-milligram capsule once a day. People with serious kidney problems are prescribed a smaller dose.
  • Cedax oral suspension is taken once daily. The usual dose is determined by the child's weight.

Uses of Cedax

  • Ceftibuten is used to treat many different types of bacterial infections such as bronchitis, tonsillitis, and otitis (ear infection).
  • Ceftibuten may also be used for purposes other than those listed in this medication guide.

Side Effects of Cedax

Side effects cannot be anticipated. If any develop or change in intensity, notify your doctor as soon as possible. Only your doctor can determine whether it is safe for you to continue taking Cedax. Side effects in adults may include:

  • Diarrhea, headache, nausea.

Warnings and precautions before taking Cedax:

  • If you have a history of gastrointestinal disease, particularly colitis, take Cedax with caution. If you develop diarrhea while taking Cedax, check with your doctor. The problem could be a sign of a serious condition.
  • Tell your doctor if you have kidney problems. Your dosage may have to be lowered. If you are diabetic, be sure to tell your doctor before starting therapy with Cedax; the oral suspension contains sugar.
  • If new infections (called superinfections) occur, talk to your doctor. You may need to be treated with a different antibiotic.

Drug Interaction :- Zantac may boost the level of Cedax in your system. Check with your doctor before combining these drugs.

Overdose

Although no specific information is available, an overdose of cephalosporins has been known to cause convulsions. Any medication taken in excess can have serious consequences. If you suspect an overdose of Cedax, seek medical attention immediately.

  • Symptoms of a ceftibuten overdose may include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal cramps.
