Elestat Medication - Uses & Side Effects


EPINASTINE (Elestat™) is an antihistamine eye solution. Epinastine helps to prevent itching of the eye caused by allergies. Generic epinastine eye solution is not yet available. ELESTAT® (epinastine HCl ophthalmic solution) 0.05% is an effective new anti-allergy therapy that is indicated for the prevention of itching associated with allergic conjunctivitis. This new ophthalmic anti-allergy medication is an antihistamine with mast cell-stabilizing activity. Elestat is an antihistamine prescribed to relieve the itchy eyes caused by an allergic trigger such as pollen or animal dander. It starts to work within 3 to 5 minutes of placing the drops in the eye, and its effects usually last for 8 hours. Epinastine is an anti-allergic medication. It inhibits processes in the body that cause allergic symptoms after exposure to an allergen.

Elestat Dosage

  • The recommended dosage is one drop in each affected eye twice a day. You should continue using Elestat until you are no longer exposed to the allergic trigger (for example, until the pollen season is over), even if you do not have itchy eyes.

Uses of Elestat

  • Elestat is used to prevent itching of the eyes associated with allergies.
  • Elestat may also be used for purposes other than those listed in this medication guide.

Side Effects of Elestat

Side effects cannot be anticipated. If any develop or change in intensity, tell your doctor as soon as possible. Only your doctor can determine if it is safe to continue using Elestat.Side effects may include:

  • Bloodshot eyes, burning sensation in the eye, cold-like symptoms, inflammation of eyelid follicles (folliculosis), itching of the eye, upper respiratory infection.

Warnings and precautions before taking Elestat:

  • If you wear contact lenses, remember that Elestat should not be used to treat eye irritation caused by your lenses.
  • Do not wear contact lenses if your eyes are red. 
  • Elestat should not be used to treat eye irritation caused by contact lenses. Contact lenses should be removed before using Elestat, and may be reinserted after 10 minutes following use of Elestat. 
  • Keep the bottle tightly closed when you are not using it.

Drug Interaction :- No interactions with other medicines have been reported.

Tell your prescriber or health care professional about all other medicines you are taking, including non-prescription medicines, nutritional supplements, or herbal products. Also tell your prescriber or health care professional if you are a frequent user of drinks with caffeine or alcohol, if you smoke, or if you use illegal drugs. These may affect the way your medicine works. Check with your health care professional before stopping or starting any of your medicines.

Overdose

An overdose of this medication is unlikely to be life-threatening. If an overdose is suspected or if the drops have been ingested, contact an emergency room or poison control center for advice.
