Nosebleed

First aid treatment

1. Tell the person with the bleeding nose not to blow it and to breathe through the mouth.
2. Have the person sit down, lean slightly forward, and hold the nostrils together for at least 10 minutes.
3. Loosen clothing around the neck, chest and waist.
4. If the nose continues to bleed, repeat the procedure. The nose should not be blown for several hours after bleeding has stopped.
5. If bleeding persists, seek medical advice.

Warning

If a person is unconscious after an accident, nose­bleeding or drainage of bloodstained or clear fluid from the nose may indicate head injury needing emergency first aid and immediate medical attention.
