Ear Problems
Bleeding
Bleeding from the ear after head injury may indicate skull fracture or some other serious condition.
First aid treatment
- Place the person in the lateral position with the bleeding ear tilted downwards on a clean dressing. Do not plug the ear or put drops in it.
- Seek medical aid urgently.
Foreign bodies
Insects and small objects can get into the ear canal.
First aid treatment
- If the foreign body is an insect, tilt the person's head away from you and put a drop or two of warm water in the canal. Then tilt the head towards you so that the insect can float out. If it remains trapped, seek medical aid.
- All firm objects should be removed by a doctor, using forceps and proper illumination of the ear canal. Do not attempt to remove anything from the ear by probing with cotton-wool swab, sticks or any rigid object: this is likely to drive the object further into the canal.
