Hickory nuts
Botanically it is called Carya ovata in the walnut family (Juglandaceae). These trees are extensively cultivated in the United States, Canada, Mexico and China for its wood and nut. Hickory wood is coarse, straight, grained and shock resistant and among the toughest, hardest and strongest of woods. It is used in sports equipment and veneers and as timber, charcoal and for smoking meats. Hickory nuts are important game food; even the bitter nuts are eaten.
