Dermatofibroma - Causes, Symptoms and Treatment to Get Rid of it Fast


Definition

A dermatofibroma is a common benign fibrous skin lesion. It is also known as fibrous histiocytoma. It is a round brownish to purple growth commonly found on the legs and arms. Dermatofibromas contain scar tissue and feel like hard lumps in the skin. It is mostly asymptomatic. But prurutus and tenderness can occur.

It usually occurs in women. The ratio of occurring this disease in females to males is four is to one. Most physicians will advocate treatment only if the lesion is in the way of shaving, or is becoming irritated by clothing. Removal can be done surgically with local anesthesia, but since much of the growth extends beneath the surface of the skin, the scar may be larger and more noticeable than the original tumor.

Dermatofibroma Causes

  1. Although the cause of dermatofibromas is unknown. This is because these are persistence. But some causes can be mentioned.
  2. Sex: the possibility of causing this disease in women is much more than in men. The ratio of men to women is 1:4.
  3. Age: Middle aged adults are more likely to get this disease than others. This disease is found rarely in children.
  4. Injury: an injury or thorn pricks may also be the reason for this disease. The possibility is more.
  5. Heredity: A family history of dermatofibroma may become the cause of it.
  6. Insect bites:  The cause of the Dermatofibroma may be insect biting.

Dermatofibroma Symptoms

  1. Dermatofibromas usually occur on the legs or arms. However it may be anywhere on the body but more chances are on legs and arms.
  2. Once developed they can persist for years sometimes they persist for the whole life.
  3. These are usually reddish brown in color. These are darker for individuals with darker skin. The color may change over time. The color usually is reddish brown but may change according to condition and color of skin.
  4. They appear as firm-feeling nodules. . If the skin over a dermatofibroma is squeezed a dimple forms, indicating tethering of the skin to the underlying fibrous tissue.
  5. These usually are as small as BB pallet but sometimes they can be as larger as fingernail. These are large rarely.
  6. Raised from the skin and may bleed if damaged. For example, if you shave over a dermatofibroma, it can bleed.

Dermatofibroma Treatment

  1. No treatment is usually necessary. Simple reassurance that the lesion is benign may be indicated. Intralesional steroid injections have been attempted with variable results.
  2. The removal can be done if you are ready for something such as The dermatofibroma is unsightly and you are prepared to swap it for a scar or It is a nuisance and causing symptoms such as itching or pain – though these symptoms may settle with time or after a steroid injection into the dermatofibroma.
  3. For cosmetic reasons the surgery may be opted. Complete excision, including the subcutaneous fat, is the ideal procedure. An inverted pyramidal biopsy technique may allow for an aesthetically pleasing result, while still providing adequate tissue for histologic findings.
