Adult Acne

Definition

Adult acne affects 25% of all adult men and 50% of adult women at some moments in their adult lives. People can develop unpleasant acne or acne recurrence in their 20s, 30's, 40's and beyond too. It can be difficult to cope with no matter your age, and can cause depression and social anxiety in an adult the same way it can in a teen. Adult acne in women is more prominent due to the unbalanced hormone production during the menstrual cycle. In adults acne lesions typically develop before, after or during the menstruation, resulting in nagging, painful bumps under the skin, usually along the jaw-line, chin or cheeks. Hormones called androgens stimulate increased oil production. The oil is broken down into free fatty acids by bacterial enzymes, which causes skin inflammation and abnormal plugging of the oil glands and hair follicle.

Causes

  1. The cause of adult acne is actually toxins and wastes that build up inside the body that cannot be properly eliminated. The body has several "normal" methods for expelling these toxins, through the liver, kidneys, colon, small intestine, and other organs.
  2. Menstruation: a woman's adult acne will revolve around her menstrual cycle and pimples will develop a few days before the onset of her period.
  3. Pregnancy: Acne is often at its worst during the first three months of pregnancy, when hormones are fluctuating all over the map. However, it is possible for acne to last throughout the entire pregnancy and to continue into the breastfeeding period.

Symptoms

  1. Pimples: The most common symptom in adult acne is to have pimples on skin. pimple bursts under the skin and releases bacteria into the surrounding tissue is called a papule. The skin around the area of a papule looks red.
  2. Blackheads: these are pinhead-sized dark spots on the skin that are caused by small plugs in pores.
  3. Whiteheads: these are white bumps on the skin that are collections of oil and skin in pores.
  4. Inflammation: the skin of the patients are filled with inflammation or rashes.

Treatment

  1. Medicines are used to treat adult acne singly or used more than one mixed together. Some medicines are Azelaic acid cream, Alpha-hydroxy acids, Benzoyl peroxide, gels, lotions, and solutions etc.
  2. Diet: For adult acne a balance diet is needed to prevent it. The diet should include fresh fruits, vegetables and most importantly lots of water.
  3. Keratolytics: these reduce the blockage in the duct of the hair and sebaceous gland allowing the sebum to flow more freely out of the gland.
  4. Antibacterial: these treatments can be applied topically or as antibiotics taken by mouth. They reduce the amount of bacteria in the sebaceous glands thereby reducing the amount of chemicals that they produce that can cause inflammation.
  5. Reduce oil: the glands are continuously generating the oils. so one need to clean this oil regularly. one can Use a gentle astringent or toner to wipe away oil.also, A masque with a partial content of sulfur helps to draw out facial oil. or one can Use an antibacterial pad with a benzoyl peroxide content to wipe away oil.
