Paget's Disease - Causes, Symptoms and Treatment

Definition

Paget’s disease is the change in the tissue such that it starts breakdown and formation irregularly. Paget’s disease is of many types. Some are Paget’s disease of bone, Paget's disease of the breast, Paget's disease of the penis, Paget's disease of the vulva etc. But the term Paget’s disease is normally used for Paget’s disease of bone. Is a chronic bone disorder that is due to irregular breakdown and formation of bone tissue. Paget's disease can cause bones to expand and weaken and may result in bone pain, arthritis, bone deformity and fractures. It is usually localized to one bone, but can involve many bones. Early in the course of the disease, old bone starts breaking down faster than new bone can be built. Over time, your body responds by generating new bone at a faster than normal rate. This rapid remodeling produces bone that's softer and weaker than normal bone, which can lead to bone pain, deformities and fractures.

Causes

  1. Cause of Paget's disease of bone has not been identified yet, though they have discovered several genes that appear to be linked to the disorder.
  2. Age: Age is an important factor in causing this disease. Paget's disease normally affects older people and is rare under the age of 40.
  3. Some scientists believe Paget's is related to a viral infection in your bone cells that may be present for many years before problems appear.
  4. Heredity: Genetic reasons have big role to play in this disease. This is thought the most appropriate cause in this disease. So. You have a lot more risk of having this disease if one or more of your family member has this disease. As many as 30 percent of people with Paget's have a close relative who also has the disease.

Symptoms

  1. Bone Pain: It is most common symptom in this disease. Bone pain can occur in any bone affected by Paget's disease and is often worse at night. It often localizes to areas adjacent to the joints
  2. Enlarged bones can compress your spinal cord or the nerves exiting your brain and spinal cord. Pain resulting from nerve compression is more severe than the bone pain associated with Paget's.
  3. The symptoms like headache, hearing loss etc. may also occur.
  4. Other symptoms are Warmth of skin overlying affected bone, neck pain, reduced height etc.

Treatment

  1. If no problem or symptoms are occurring then no treatment is needed mostly.
  2. Doctors commonly use Bisphosphonates to treat osteoporosis and increase bone density, but they may also use them to reduce the activity of Paget's disease.
  3. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs may also be used. These reduce the pain and inflammation to a high degree.
  4. The drugs are used alternately when people do not respond to either taken alone.
  5. Surgery is used to help fractures heal or to replace joints damaged by severe arthritis but it is used rarely. If Paget's disease affects your spine or your skull, you may need surgery to reduce pressure on nerves and prevent serious complications.
