Enlarged Pores - Definition, Causes, Symptoms and Treatment

Definition

To know about enlarged pores first we should know what is pore. Skin pores are nothing more than the port in the skin from which hair grows and the skin's natural oil is released onto the skin.  Everyone has pores, but not everyone’s are easily visible to the naked eye.  There is a big problem with pores. When the pores are not treated rightly they become clogged and enlarged. Coupled with dry skin, pores can look worse than they actually are. But there are definitely ways to unclog pores and amazing makeup products to give the illusion of having almost no pores at all.

A common problem for those with oily skin, enlarged pores often appear in the areas on and around the nose, chin and forehead. They can also be hereditary, passed down from your parents. Enlarged pores are not a common occurrence for those with dry skin.

Causes

  1. Heredity: Pores appear enlarged for many reasons. Probably the most common is genetics. You have a lot of chances to occur enlarged pores if any of your family members has this already.
  2. Oily skin: Oily skin also causes pores to appear enlarged because the skin tends to become thickened.
  3. Hygiene: If oils or skin, cells which are usually shed, are allowed to collect around the pores, the pores will have the appearance of being enlarged.
  4. Sunlight: The over exposure of skin to the direct sunlight may also cause the skin to be thickened which may lead to enlarged pores condition.
  5. Another cause is the loss of collagen, elastin and water in the skin from sun damage causes the tissues beneath the skin to shrink pulling down the edges of the pore.  Thus causing them to appear enlarged.

Symptoms

  1. Black Heads: the black heads are the symptoms of the enlarged pores
  2. Oily skin: Enlarged pores make more oil to flow on skin. So the oily skin may also be the symptom of the enlarged pores.
  3. Large pores on entire face.
  4. Post-breakout red/dark marks that linger.
  5. Sometimes the face may have cysts all over the face if skin has enlarged pores.

Treatment

  1. Apply the mixture of sugar, olive oil and honey on wet face and rub it very gently in a circular motion. Remove with water with hands only.
  2. Stop using harsh toners or astringents on the affected areas. Using these products may have a very temporary 'tightening' effect on pores, but it's extremely short-lived. In fact, harsh astringents actually encourage oil glands to over-produce oil, leading to an increase in the size of pores.
  3. Avoid putting moisturizers on the area as the skin produces quite enough moisture and oil on its own and doesn't need more.
  4. Microdermabrasion: is a method in which powerful electronic vacuum spray microcrystals of aluminum dioxide over the areas affected to reduce enlarge pores.
