Extreme Overexposure (Hypothermia)

This dangerous emergency is best treated in hospital but, as the victim is often found unconscious at some distance from shelter or telephones, first aid is vital while waiting for help to arrive.

Symptoms and signs

  • Shivering stops, but other symptoms of moderate overexposure are more pronounced.
  • Breathing is slow and shallow.
  • Pulse is slow.
  • A baby becomes quiet and refuses food.
  • Unconsciousness follows.

First aid treatment

  1. Seek medical aid urgently, and stay with the casualty until help arrives.
