Absorbed Poisons

Some pesticides and some ther toxic chemicals can be absorbed through the skin. It may take some time for symptoms and signs to become evident. When poisoning is suspected and there is no history of a toxin being taken by mouth or inhaled, check whether the casualty has been in contact with any poison from, for example, crop-spraying or industry.

First aid treatment

  1. Ask the casualty to remove contaminated clothing and footwear. If you need to help, wear rubber gloves.
  2. Wash contaminated skin thoroughly with soap and water, and later wash the contaminated clothes separately from other articles.
  3. Seek medical aid if any symptoms or signs of poisoning occur. If you know the name of the chemical, tell the doctor or hospital. Keep suspect containers in plastic bags.
  4. If there are no symptoms or signs, phone the Poisons Information Centre for advice on whether further action or vigilance is needed.
